Where can I get the blueprints / plans for my house? Who do I talk to at the courthouse?

At Ashlar, I firmly b that an educated home buyer or seller is best equipped to make their own decisions. That’s why I take time out of my day each and every day to answer someone’s real estate question.  And, when I think the answer can be useful to you as well, I share it here.  So without further ado:

Question:

Where can I get the blueprints / plans for my house? Who do I talk to at the courthouse?

The “get the house blueprints from the courthouse records” is a bit of a movie / tv myth, at least for old residential stuff.

Zoning, Planning, Permitting would be the department to talk to, but again I’d be very surprised if they have anything. Public permit data usually rolls off after 20 years, so a call to that department may yield SOME data.

But unfortunately the likelihood of historic updates being on file is also relatively low as up until maybe the last 5 -15 years or so no one cared about residential permits for updates / changes. So tons of converted garages, roofs, windows, happened before it became important to do so. Sure, you were still ‘supposed’ to, but enforcement was low.

The only time I see blueprints is when they’ve been kept from original construction. New work (like 2010 or newer) could very well be digitized, but again I’ve yet to see it for residential
